I went to the opening of An Uncommon Thread at Hauser and Wirth, Somerset on Saturday, featuring 10 upcoming artists working in unusual mediums as a way of evoking memories. Whilst there I spent too long in the bookshop (ain't that always the way!) and managed to get a copy of a book that has been on my wish-list for far too long.
Many Hands Make a Quilt by Jess Bailey, from Public Library Quilts - the subtitle is Short Histories of Radical Quilting, which captures it entirely.
"Be nobody's darling; be an outcast,
Take the contradictions of your life
and wrap around you like a shawl,
to parry stones, to keep you warm"
Alice Walker
Jess is a massive presence in the world of quilts and I wholeheartedly recommend everyone to follow her on Instagram and to get a copy of this book if you believe in social justice and the ability for needle and thread to make a difference.
