Guided by the legacy of the craft movement of Britain, I create textiles for thoughtful interiors, using natural and slow processes. Linen and hemp fabrics are coloured with native and seasonal plant dyes produced in my home studio on the South coast of England. Simple hand-carved wooden blocks are used to create modernist patterns that are at times embellished with hand-painted brush marks.

Apple and madder Indian handloom scarf , decorated with a the Porto print beautifully drying in the warm sun. I can’t stress enough how much warm sunny days helps with natural dyeing as I can work outside and the dye pans and cold water feel a lot more pleasant with the sun on your back 🌞🌞
I hope to have some of these scarves finished to sell at #frome market on Sunday - fingers crossed.

Printing with mordant today onto handloom Indian scarves. These will then go into the dye baths - some into madder and some into my apple pruning pan.
I am going to be selling these in @museumartcraft in July, but may pop some on the website too.
I have two weight scarfs - one heavy weight for autumn/ winter and this one here which is more lightweight for summer.
The design is another one from modernist series, inspired by a wonderful book full of British modernist homes but with an interloper design from my trip to Porto.
It’s a beautiful day here so will escape the studio this afternoon to enjoy it !

Second year woad plants being allowed to flower and set seed in the dye garden , to ensure more crops next year. I am having a slight panic as I can’t find this years seed to plant …
I’m sure it will turn up SOON😅

#findamakerweek day two.
A day in the life.
I was on a coach at 6.45 am to get to London for a 11am appointment .
Currently sat on a tube with a big bag (homemade) of my fabrics and wall hangings, to present them to an interior design company.
I am desperate for tea and will rest with one and my book for an hour when I reach my destination.
I am a natural dyer, block printer and pattern maker who works from her studio on the edge of the South Downs.
My days are varied , I may be dyeing , mordanting , designing , applications for residencies , letters to galleries .. sometimes sewing , often printing .
I have to respond to the demands and weather of the day as I often have to work outside with my large dye pans and when preparing dye material (chopping up tree prunings)
I had planned to nicely plan my week’s post for #findamakerweek, but the fact that yesterday’s post went up at 9 and this one is of my feet and a bag is probably the best reflection of my practice . Varies , creative and adaptable but always slow, reflective and considering the environmental impact of my practice and the seasons.

It is very late in the day but this is my addition to #findamakerweek. ( the day ran away from me with family, however I spent some lovely time binding the edge of this wallhanging)
I am a textile maker who works with colour from nature, reacting to seasonality availability - I hand stitch one off pieces and work to commissions.
I love the imperfect nature of hand printing combined with the need to work with what nature provides me, which ties in with my belief in slowing down and consuming less.
My work is slow and my palette is limited, quietly radical as it provides an alternative stance to fast and artificially bright and synthetic.
I hope to share more as the week goes on, and may even manage to show my face 😳😅

Porto print in plum. Every time I print this I remember my trip to the beautiful city of Porto where I took so many photos as the architecture was a great mix of modernist (😍) and traditional.
This print is a beauty and gives so many variations, I am looking forward to sizing it up for even more opportunities.
I had a great day today chatting all things natural dye with @samanthajones457 in Farnham, and saw the wonderful dye garden that she has created with @myrtle_sweet at @museumoffarnham.
She is brimming with ideas and so I am hopeful our paths will cross again.
